Public Works Sewer Service Charges will be increased July 1st. The new rate will be $3.27 per HCF (748 gallons = 1 HCF). Bureau of Sanitation charges ratepayers by an estimation. They receive from ratepayers over $550 million per year to fix the infrastructure of the filtration plants and sewer system. What they do with the money is anyone's guess because the sewer infrastructure needs a billion dollars worth of work. I suppose high union salaries and over priced sub contractor's helps spend the money. The whole SSC estimation is done by a convoluted formula made up at the Bureau of Sanitation. Bottom line this portion on your DWP bill is a hidden tax. In many cases this sewer service charge portion can be reduced up to 80% by installing a DWP sub water meter. This meter will give you an actual count rather than estimation.
