DWP wasting users money
Contributed by: Leonard Horowitz on 2/15/2008

DWP has put out to bid a $50,000 contract for a contractor to run pregnancy and breast-feeding classes for its workers.

Last year's contract was $37,000 that allowed a specialist to work 16 hours per week, fielded telephone calls and conducted 48 classes for expectant mothers.

This same service is probably already provided by their medical insurance program and is free from many hospitals. Why should we, the DWP users, pay for this?

DWP is not in the humanitarian business. General Manager Nahai thinks that they are. Other commissioners do not agree. Commissioner Nick Patsaouras argued against it. "We're in the business of producing water and electricity, not in the social-service business."

It seems to me General Manager Nahai, another attorney, is not a businessman. The first thing he wants is water and electric rate increases and the next thing is teaching pregnancy and breast-feeding to his employees.

There is something wrong with this picture. How many companies in the U.S. offer this program to their employees? Why not use the $50,000 on a few more new transformers to help DWP users when the next blackout happens. The lights are on right now but nobody is home.
