At the June 12 meeting of newly formed Law Explorer Post 1926, five San Fernando Valley high school students, all charter members of the post, became the post's first youth leaders.
They are
Jason R.
(president),
Leeza A.
(vice president - administration),
Sarah B.
(vice president - program),
Stacey A.
(secretary) and
Jake G.
(treasurer).
The leadership selection took place following an informal, but animated discussion of the just-announced U. S. Supreme Court decision upholding the constitutional right of Guantanamo prisoners to petition U. S. courts for their freedom in
habeas corpus
proceedings.
Before going on with the business of the meeting, the teens in attendance participated enthusiastically in the legal discussion.
Attorney
David C. Gurnick
and mediator
David I. Karp
, both of them post co-advisors and members of the San Fernando Valley Bar Association (SFVBA), facilitated the discussion.
They also guided the new youth leaders as they began to create an agenda for organizing the post and recruiting new members.
Also present were attorney
Sue Bendavid
, president of SFVBA, attorney
Michele Morley
of the SFVBA and
Rosie Soto
, director of public services for SFVBA. They and the parents in attendance were there to show their support for this new outreach program of the Bar Association and for the participating teens.
Exploring is Learning for Life's co-ed, career-oriented program for high school age students. Exploring provides opportunities for learning, leadership, character development, and association with adults involved in the careers of interest to its youth members.
The SFVBA embraced the Exploring program and sponsors this Explorer post to facilitate its goals of increasing diversity in the legal profession.
The SFVBA believes that, by captivating the interests of high school students, teens of many different backgrounds may become motivated to pursue careers in law or government.
The Explorer post is a project of the Bar Association's Diversity Committee.
Explorer Post 1926 plans to meet at least once per month, on the second Thursday of the month. Presently, the post convenes its meetings in the conference room facilities of Lewitt, Hackman, Shapiro, Marshall & Harlan,a law corporation, a very supportive business, real estate and civil litigation law firm located in Encino.
