As Coach
Reza Shahmirzadi
's AYSO Region 71 U-16 boys team was finishing a win on the Van Nuys field of their most recent game, a fascinating thing was happening on the sidelines.
A young man was teaching us how to peel a mango with great speed. If you've ever bought mangos, you know it is not an easy task to peel a mango nor is it easy to gain a lot of fruit from the mango because of the size of a seed.
Oftentimes, it becomes an absolute mess to peel a mango. In fact, I avoid buying mangos for this very reason. But, not so on the soccer sidelines as I have a new love of mangos. They are not only delicious, but apparently easier to deal with than ever before.
This young man showed us how to peel the mango first with a vegetable peeler. He had a true talent for doing it quickly and cleanly, so that may take practice.
Then, he put a round stick into the bottom center of the mango like a popsicle stick. By holding that stick, it made it far easier to actually score and slice the mango into long beautiful pieces.
I have never thought the mango was delicious because of the work involved in removing the edible fruit until now.
The mango, which is low in calories, is now my new fruit of choice as it's a delicious treat! Thank you for teaching us all about mangos!
