Cycling community gets kids on track
Contributed by: Alfred Nash on 8/24/2008

A Southern California bicycle club and a local bicycle shop have pooled their resources to help area kids get their lives on track, literally.

Starting with a grant from the Channel Islands Bicycle Club, the Encino Velodrome Association worked with Sundance Cycles Bike Shop to refurbish their stable of rental bikes for kids.

Dozens of Southern California kids come out to the Encino Velodrome in the Sepulveda basin every Thursday night to learn how to ride bicycles with only one gear and no brakes on the banked concrete track that was used for the 1968 U.S. National Championships & U.S. Olympic Trials as well as the 1972 & 1973 Grand Prix of the United States, televised on ABC's Wide World of Sports.

"These bikes let the kids come out, have fun, learn a new skill, make new friends, get good exercise, race and win", said Alfred Nash, board member of the Encino Velodrome. "The bikes seem to wear out faster than the kids, though, and it's great to get them working again, especially for the smallest kids."

The Channel Islands Bicycle Club is the premiere cycling club in western Ventura County for beginners and the experienced road cyclist.
