The Shomrei Torah Synagogue softball team won the Synagogue Softball "C" Division Championship on June 22.

I want to thank and congratulate all of our players, who through their dedication and commitment, made this a winning and successful season. After managing our successful and hard-working team for the past three years, I am proud to announce that our team has been invited to move up and play in the "B2" Division.

Many of our talented players have been together with me for the past three years and additional talented players have joined the team throughout the past two years. The following is our list of championship players and the positions they have played throughout the year:

Peter Gold - P; Doug Irvine - C; Joel Fishman - 1B; Dan Latter - 2B, RCF, RF;
Howard Schwartz - SS; Douglas Kolker - 3B; Andy Weitz - RF, 1B; Rafael Estrada - RCF, RF, 2B; Brent Merritt - Outfield, 2B, SS, 3B; Michael Levy - 3B, LCF, P; Mark Miller - LCF; Marc Grossmann - LF, 3B, SS; Art Pfefferman - P, C, 2B; Robert Silverberg - Manager

While the majority of our players will be continuing on the team for another year, we have openings for full-time players and relief players. If you are interested in joining this dedicated and fun loving team, please contact Robert Silverberg before September.

The following is a re-cap of the championship game between Shomrei Torah and Temple Emanuel on June 22.

We have all heard the old pro football adage, which is - it's very difficult for one team to beat a division rival three times in one year. Well, the old adage came true in softball at the "C" Division Championship game this year, where Temple Emanuel's bid for a perfect undefeated season (15-0 coming in) went awry with an upset loss to its division rival STS. Final score - STS over Emanuel 14-4.

STS got out of the gate quickly with fourruns in the top of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI double by Mark Miller and a two-RBI single by Howard Schwartz.

Just like the first two meetings between these two teams that were closely fought contests - both won by Temple Emanuel, handing STS its only two non-forfeited losses of the season - this game appeared to be going in that direction when Temple Emanuel came back with threeruns of its own in the bottom of the second inning, cutting the lead to one run.

But STS bounced back with four runsof its own in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Mark Miller and a two-runrun homer by Rafael Estrada. STS essentially put the game out of reach with five more big runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Marc Grossman.

After the three runs allowed in the second inning, Peter Gold shut down Temple Emanuel's normally high-powered offense, with the help of some stellar defense, limiting them to only one more run over the last fiveinnings.

So, after falling short in the playoffs the last three years, the fourth time was the charm for STS, as its team members captured the "C" Division Championship, 14-4.
