Huckabee Spins the Cross
Contributed by: Michael Turner on 12/19/2007

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee took a decidedly right turn in his Christmas message to voters. The Baptist minister and former Arkansas governor delivers his homily with a cross floating in the background. It a telling sign that the candidate is definitely pandering to the conservative voters who reside in the Bible Belt state of Iowa.

Huckabee evokes the Christian spirit in his message when he says, "what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ." His campaign staff denies the that the representation is a cross, but its presence is unmistakable. You know this is the effect he wanted to achieve. One would hope that a candidate who is running for an office that represents a culturally diverse nation would tone down the religious rhetoric.

There are many pressing issues that need to be addressed by the candidates running for president and religion is not one of them. I hope that whoever heads the Repblican and Democratic tickets will consider what is more important to all the people of this great country.
