Senior singers serenade other seniors
Contributed by: David I. Karp on 7/11/2008

The Belmont Belles and Beaus performed for their peers in Burbank on June 17.

Formed as a volunteer singing group for their own enjoyment, the group consists of residents of Belmont Village of Encino, ages 70 to 90-plus, who give concerts at their place of residence as well as others.

Belmont Village of Encino is an assisted living facility for seniors.

The June 17 concert took place at Belmont Village of Burbank. It included "Alexander's Rag Time Band," "Bye Bye Blackbird," "Sentimental Journey" and other songs.

Phyllis Morris, a member of the group and the president of Belmont's Residents' Council in Encino, said, "One fellow who lives there liked us so much that he joined our group. The van transports him to Encino so that he can attend our rehearsals."

Morris explained, "We sing songs from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. We have a lot of fun singing, but we take it very seriously. We try to think about the wonderful lyrics and enunciate clearly so the words have meaning."

The singing group rehearses every Tuesday. They are now working on songs from such Broadway musicals as "South Pacific," "Oklahoma," "The King and I" and "Carousel."

No date has been set for the next concert, but the group is enthusiastically and diligently preparing.
