Los Angeles - The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) endorsed State Assembly candidate Laurette Healey (40 th AD) at their quarterly board meeting this weekend.

"For as long as I have known her, Laurette has been a relentless civic advocate, fighting the most important battles on the environment, healthcare, equal rights and small businesses," said former State Controller Steve Westly who appointed Healey as his Deputy State Controller during his administration.

Healey, a breast cancer survivor, whose district measures among the most polluted air in the nation, has pledged to spearhead major initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in fulfillment of the Global Warming Solutions Act.

Healey believes that government must protect the right of all citizens to a healthy environment, and that failure to do so is a fundamental violation of its obligation to serve the best interests of the people. The following are some critical points Healey has identified and will pursue when in office:

  1. Protecting Our Children The California EPA must base its "risk assessment" on those who are most vulnerable to environmental pollutants - women and children. The current tests are based on healthy adult males weighing 150 pounds. EPA approved chemical exposure safety levels must be safe for all of our citizens and must include gender, age, and race as part of its testing parameters.
  1. Monitoring Multiple Chemical Interactions Since most adult bodies carry more than 90 synthetic chemicals at one time. It is imperative that safety studies and human health risk assessments are conducted to determine the health factors to humans when chemicals interact. Presently there are no requirements to produce data about chemical interactions and its effect on human health.
  1. Implementing Workplace Education Workers have the right to know the health impacts of the environment that they work in. Daily monitoring of hazardous toxins or environmental pollutants that may be present at worksites should be a public safety mandate.
  1. Providing Healthy Choice Tax Incentives Manufacturers should be allocated tax incentives, extended patent protection, and preferred intellectual property rights, as incentives to produce environmentally safe products.

Healey believes that the sheer density of population combined with the magnitude of California's geography and projected population growth only increases the urgency with which we must address and enact legislation to protect the public health.

Laurette Healey is the Democratic Candidate for the 40 th Assembly District. She is endorsed by: Senators Sheila Kuehl, Ellen Corbett, Christine Kehoe, and Majority Whip, Carol Migden, as well as, Assemblymembers John Laird, Mark Leno, Hon. Paul Koretz, and Hon. Jackie Goldberg, LA DWP Commission Chair David Nahai, Hon. Steve Westly, LA City Councilmember, Bill Rosendahl, Gaby Bashner, Valley Chair, Magen David Adom, Dr. Lynn Levine, Founding Board Member, One Generation, and Dr. Marlene Bane, AJC, President's Council Chair, and wife of the late Hon. Tom Bane who served as the district's State Representative for more than twenty years.
