Got a question for you ... why do you contribute to this forum? Why do you blog, or write letters to the editor of your local newspapers?
I'm betting your reasons fall into one of six categories: you want to vent, condemn, praise, inform, question or motivate.
You've got something on your mind. You see something that needs fixing. Or, you want to let somebody know they're doing a good job (or not!). You want your voice heard. You want to make a difference.
You've taken the first step. Now, get ready to make the big leap.
Your Neighborhood Council is calling you.
No longer in its infancy, the Neighborhood Council program has already exerted its influence with the DWP (helped reduce last year's rate increase request, and is actively involved in this year's request process); confronted developers over land-use and environmental-impact issues (Sunland/Tujunga, most recently); and have been invited to participate and contribute to the Westfield Shopping Mall expansion in the West Valley.
These activists, sitting on their respective Neighborhood Council Boards, are no different from you ... they care deeply about their communities. They are homeowners, business owners, property owners, like yourselves. They have no special qualifications for their board seats, other than a desire to channel their time, energy and concerns (and dreams) into action.
Won't you consider joining them? Watch the Daily News over the next few days for a full-page ad calling for candidates for board positions in the five Neighborhood Councils of the Southwest Valley.
Created as a collective of Councils with very similar demographics and concerns, the South Valley Election Alliance (SVEA) has coalesced Woodland Hills, West Hills, Tarzana, Winnetka and Reseda Neighborhood Councils into a new dynamic bloc, leveraging our collective influence with city agencies and City Hall.
You know you've thought about it. You've wondered what else you can do to be heard and make a difference. Here's your opportunity.
Watch for the ad in the Daily News and visit the Web site of your Neighborhood Council for more information.
Not sure in which Council area you might qualify as a stakeholder? Visit the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment site at
www.lacityneighborhoods.com
.
Now, go back to your keyboard. But don't get too comfortable. Get up and get going.
