Sylmar NC Reaffirms Need for E.I.R. from PHCMC
Contributed by: Nick Krall on 7/30/2007

The Sylmar Neighborhood Council (SNC) reaffirmed the position of needing a full Environmental Impact Report (EIR) in order to support the Providence Holy Cross Medical Center (PHCMC) expansion.

The contradictory position of June 28, found to be invalid according to SNC by-laws by a grievance panel, was rescinded and in separate motions, after discussion and testimony from reps of PHCMC, other neighborhood councils, the group Citizens Advocating Responsible Eexpansion (CARE) and Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE), the SNC passed a re-affirmation of both the need for an EIR and support for the coalition of groups calling for an EIR.

Representatives from PHCMC were Director of Construction Waldo Romero, and Public Relations staff Elaine Kaufmann (who never identified herself as working for Providence) and Maria Townsend.

When asked directly by one of the SNC directors, "If it would bring us all together and move the project forward, why doesn't PHCMC just do an E.I.R.?"

Romero responded that PHCMC will do what is required of them by the City Planning Department, but unless it is required, PHCMC has no plans or desire to offer an EIR.

Tammy Flores, president of the SNC, also spoke out if favor of PHCMC building without an EIR
