Labor Day thoughts and reflections
Contributed by: Terry Florian on 9/1/2008

I would first like to say on this Labor Day, that I am proud to be an American and I am equally proud and thankful for living in America.

As I think of all the men and women who toil and those who cannot find work, or as John McCain says " The middle class is anyone who makes less than $5 million a year," I guess most of us are in reality poverty stricken. And by the way I do know how many homes I own! None!

I started to reflect on the fact that on the November ballot there will be bills to increase the sales tax, by the state, and if they have their way, by the City Council. The mayor has increased the fees to pick up trash because the city needs the money, he says.

The cost of water is going up, I heard. And then I say kudos to Laura Chick! She did an audit of the Deptartment of Public Works and found them sitting on $1.2 billion in "special funds."

The mayor says he hopes that the state won't take any of Los Angeles' money to use to balance the state budget. I have a great idea! Instead of sitting on $1.2 billion in unused special funds, lets leave the Department of Public Works with enough money they need for operating costs, let's be fair here, and then let's use that money to stop the increase in Los Angeles' sales tax, let's not put an additional tax on trash pick-up, let's not increase the cost of water (and do you remember the article where the City Council went over to the head of the DWP's house and had a sprinkler party in a drought?) and use that money instead.

If we are using the money then the state will have no ability to take what is not there to take.
