The energy and beauty exuded through the soft strokes and peaceful artwork of
Joanne Julian can be viewed in Cal State Northridge's upcoming art exhibit, "Joanne Julian: Counterpoints," opening Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Julian is an internationally recognized artist whose current works, very large ink and acrylic Zen circles on paper, transform simple shapes into serene paintings.
"Joanne Julian has the extraordinary ability to demonstrate tight discipline and exuberant abandon in her ink and acrylic drawings, whether of highly detailed botanical studies or of very large Zen circles," said
Louise Lewis, director of CSUN's
art gallery.
Julian is a native of Los Angeles and received her bachelor's and master's degrees in sculpture and printmaking at Cal State Northridge. She later received her master's in fine arts from Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design. Since then Julian has mounted 20 solo exhibitions and more than 60 group exhibitions nationally.
"There is little doubt that the visitor will be captivated by the beauty and spirituality of these works," said Lewis. "Feelings of calm and of exhilaration mutually contribute to a sense of hope in this otherwise distressed world."
The exhibit will commence with a reception scheduled for Friday, Jan. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. On Monday, Jan. 28, a gallery talk discussing Julian's work will begin at 10 a.m.
The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., and on Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m. Parking is $5 and available in Lots D6 and E6 located off Halsted Street.
