Leo and Alice Howard receive leadership award
Contributed by: Zita Gluskin on 10/1/2008

More than 250 people from the San Fernando Valley, Beverly Hills and the community at large came together on Sunday, Sept. 14, to honor Alice and Leo Howard and Touran Mahboubi with 2008 Distinguished Community Leader Awards.

NA'AMAT, originally called Pioneer Women, supports its sister movement in Israel with funding for daycare centers, legal aid centers, domestic violence shelters, vocational high schools, safe rooms as needed and much more.

The luncheon at the Olympic Collection was sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Council of NA'AMAT USA and featured Rabbi Ed Feinstein of Valley Beth Shalom as the keynote speaker.

Jimmy Delshad, Beverly Hills Councilman and former mayor, gave warm greetings to the 2008 honorees. In addition, Hagai Meirom, treasurer of the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency, spoke of the effective work of NA'AMAT Israel and the important role the honorees played in supporting its many institutions in Israel.

Leo and Alice Howard have had strong connections to Israel since their marriage 60 years ago, an anniversary that coincides with the state of Israel. Alice, past National President of NA'AMAT USA from 2004 to 2007, has held every key leadership position in the organization including president of the San Fernando Valley Council and its western area coordinator.

She now focuses her efforts on starting new chapters as she continues to be an active member of the Natanya group in the San Fernando Valley. Leo and the children and grandchildren of the Howard family are all members and supporters of NA'AMAT USA.

In addition to her work for NA'AMAT USA, Alice volunteers at the counseling center at Valley Beth Shalom. She and Leo actively support AIPAC and the Jewish National Fund.

Touran Mahboubi, a resident of Beverly Hills since her arrival in the United States in 1978 with the onset of the Iranian revolution, became active in NA'AMAT because of her desire to raise money for projects in Israel that addressed the issues of child care and women's welfare among others.

She has traveled to Israel many times and is proud to have established a NA'AMAT group in Beverly Hills that attracted many Iranian women living in the area.
