'Nobel' prizes given to students for summer camp
Contributed by: valleynews .com on 7/7/2008

Five "Nobel" prizes were handed out locally last week.

As part of an essay contest about patriotism, the winning students at Nobel Middle School in Northridge will now get to attend a weeklong summer camp at Big Bear, thanks to a sponsorship program through North Valley YMCA and Northridge Kiwanis Club.

The students responded to the question, "What does the American flag
mean to me?"

Following are some excepts from the winning entries:

The American flag, to me, means that should this flag ever fall, all of America would be no more. The American flag is a beacon that tells us, shows us and teaches us of how the United States cameto be. The many men, women and loved ones that had died protecting this country, this home for us. The tears shed, the sweat poured, and the blood spilled to win this country's freedom is all stored in the proud American flag."
- Narine Karapetyn

"The American Flag has long been not only a sign of freedom but a symbolism of bravery, truth and a passion to keep and remember what we have. On 9/11, we faced a horrible and difficult tragedy but through it all our flag stood there, a banner of hope. The flag will always stand for life, goodness and prosperity. The flag stands for who we are, where we live and what lies in our hearts."
- Charles Graham

"Many people say that the American Flag only stands out as a symbol of American way and tradition; I beg to differ. I believe that the flag is a sign of tranquility between people. In war, the flag stands out as the determination
of the United States and its fellow people. In other nations, it serves as a monument of alliance and diplomatic relations. In its home country, the United States of America, it serves a symbol for patriotism. Furthermore, he American flag means more to me than just a beacon of justice but a beacon of hope."
- Samson Tse

"The American Flag has simple shapes and colors but has an important message for all of us. The 13 red and white stripes represent the 13 original colonies that we fought for. The white stars against the blue square represent the 50 states, but also represent a constellation that shows that we are one union. It also means to me that it shows respect; respect to our soldiers. Soldiers deserve respect because they are men and woman who fight for what we have today."
- Monica Martinez

"The American Flag means to me a special opportunity that people would literally die to have. The freedom to be whoever they would like to be. My parents are immigrants from Nigeria. They both, like most immigrants, were trying to have a better life than their country offered. They have come from very bumpy roads to get to this point in their lives and now see how this decision has bettered their lives and changed them forever."
- Zena Edosomwan
