Madison Middle School in North Hollywood celebrated 10 years of success with the Madison Community Collaborative (MCC) during an event on Monday, May 21.

More than 100 community agencies, school personnel, students and parents attended the event. The Madison Middle School Concert Orchestra performed. Families shared their testimonials, staff were honored and a short video wasshown depiciting the many programs provided through MCC's partnerships.

MCC began in 1997 with a grant to the California Department of Education for Healthy Start funding. After the initial three-year funding period, MCC has gone on to raise $1.8 million in funding through both government and private dollars to bring services to children and families.

MCC services five schools - Grant High, Madison Middle and Kittridge/Erwin/Monlux elementary schools. They are all located in Van Nuys and North Hollywood, where students from the elementary schools typically attend Madison Middle School and Madison graduates then attend Grant High.

The program has been extremely successful in providingmore than 120,000 units of service to these families over the past 10 years.

Students are referred to MCC when they have behavior, academic or family problems. MCC staff then reach out to the family and determine what is causing that student to have difficulty.

Through an intensive, family-centered process, MCC connects families to a variety of resources to address the problems:

* - Mental health counseling through interns and onsite counseling providers.

* - Tutoring and mentoring through the MCC mentoring program.

* - After-school support through LAUSD's Beyond the Bell programs, support groups through Friends of the Family or MCC staff.

* - Parenting classes both through Madison Middle School's Parent Center or through community agencies, legal advocacy, health providers, violence prevention services, basic needs (food, clothing, shelter assistance) and many other resources.

Students and parents have demonstrated great success after participating in the program. A significant number improve their GPA, attendance rate and behavior and the majority of families improve their access to basic need support, such as food, shelter, clothing, transportation, employment and child care.

MCC has been a true support to the community and the celebration provided a wonderful forum in which to celebrate and share their successes.
