Floyd Levin
, born Sept.24, 1922, left us on Jan. 29, 2007. Floyd was a prominent jazz historian, long-time resident of Studio City, California and author who conducted scores of oral history interviews for the Smithsonian Institution and the Jazz Archive at Tulane University.
Floyd Levin produced numerous jazz albums and has composed lyrics for several songs that have been recorded by internationally known jazz artists and was a member of A.S.C.A.P. His composition
Costa Mesa, U.S.A.
was adopted as the official song by the city of Costa Mesa, Calif., in 2005.
Floyd Levin created the international fund drive that resulted in the construction of the statue of
Louis Armstrong
that stands in Armstrong Park in New Orleans, La.
Floyd Levin and his wife of 65 years,
Lucille
, were honored in 1985 as the Grand Emperor and Empress of the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee. In 1995, the American Federation of Musicians, Local 47, named him an honorary member, "for his dedication to and promotion of, musicians and live music." In 1996, the Los Angeles Jazz Society presented him with their Leonard Feather Communicator Award.
Floyd Levin's book,
Classic Jazz - A personal view of the music and the musicians
. was published in 2000.
Floyd Levin is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille, his son and daughter-in-law,

, his grandson and his wife,

Stacey
, and his great-granddaughter,
Sydney Ashton Levin
.
