I would like to wish my Grandmother Hazel Barkley a very happy birthday as she turns 108 on November 23, 2008.
Hazel was born in West Virginia on November 23, 1900. She grew up on a farm and went to a one room school house. Even though she only went until the 8th grade, she is one of the smartest people I know.
She married Edgar Barkley on April 3, 1919.They moved to Uniontown, PA where they lived and raised three daughters, Doris, Jody and Lois. They also had a successful soda pop business and she often told us how many bottles she washed herself.
In 1956 Hazel and Ed moved to Van Nuys, CA to be near their children and grandchildren. They were very active at Van Nuys Baptist church until Ed passed away in 1969, two days before their 50th Wedding Anniversary. She is still living in her own home. She has 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She remembers everyone's birthday and is always aware of the many happenings in her family.
She is in very good health, in fact we kid that she is the Bionic Granny. She has a great memory, in fact she remembers more than I do, and I am only 53! According to Grandma, I am not even middle aged yet! hahahaha.
Happy Birthday Grandma!
Thanks for letting me tell you all about my remarkable Grandma.
