Molly Weiner celebrates 104th birthday

Mollie Weiner was a squirmy, hyperactive baby when she was born. That was over a century ago.

She turned 104 this past Sept. 11 and it's been only a year or so ago that she started to slow down.

In fact, fellow residents at the Park Ventura Retirement Hotel in Woodland Hills have nicknamed her "Hurricane Mollie."

She entered the world in Nova Scotia, Canada, the youngest of four children. They all loved sports, and her three older brothers wouldn't cut her any slack just because she was a girl.

She became adept at playing baseball, basketball, tennis, ice and roller skating and golf. She maintained high marks in school and, in her spare time, learned to play the piano.

She also was a formidable opponent at the poker table and still enjoys playing cards.

After high school, Mollie - her real first name is Sarah - moved to New York, where she met and married Lou, her beloved husband of 36 years.
They had one child, their son, Rick.

Lou was a salesman, and his jobs took the family to Muncie, Ind., Troy, N.Y., Atlanta, New York City and finally to Cleveland, Ohio, where she worked for several years as an executive secretary.

Lou died in 1970, and Mollie moved to Miami Beach, Fla., where one of her brothers and some friends from Cleveland lived.

Then, in 1993, she moved once again, to the San Fernando Valley to be near her son.

Asked the secret of her longevity, Mollie said she just takes it one day at a time.
"I was a smoker once," she admitted, "but I never inhaled."
