Walter
and
Charlene Metzler
met on a blind date in Ogden, Utah, on June 25, 1942.
It was love at first sight and they married the following Feb. 25.
Walter served in the Army Air Forces in Europe for three years during World War II.
Charlene attended Ogden Business School and worked for the Supply Depot in Ogden during WWII.
They moved to L.A. in 1946 and then to North Hollywood in 1950. They later moved to an area of Van Nuys that became Valley Glen.
Charlene has worked several jobs throughout her life, including in the office at Rathbuns Department Store in North Hollywood.
Walter attended the Art Center School of Photography in Los Angeles and graduated in 1949. The school is now located in Pasadena.
He opened his own photography studio in 1950 in L.A. Later, his son
Richard
joined the business and the studio moved to Glendale.
Richard passed away in 2006 in a motorcycle accident.
The Metzlers have two other children -
Cheryl Becker
of Simi Valley and
Mike
of Valley Glen. They also have seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Bowling has been a big part of the Metzlers' lives. Both Charlene and Walter were active in various area bowling leagues for 35 years, and Charlene worked in the office of the Womens' International Bowling Congress.
They also enjoy traveling and have visited several countries including Australia. On cruises, they've traveled to Tahiti and the Caribbean.
Charlene said the secret to their long marriage is simple: "Respect each other and love each other."
