Memorial Park celebrates 60th with concert in park
Contributed by: SUSAN WOODNICK on 5/16/2008

This Memorial Day, the Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks War Memorial park will honor our American Veterans.

In 1947, a group from the American Legion raised money to buy what is now Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Park. They gave it to the city with the agreement that a memorial would be built for all veterans who served the nation.

The park itself is a monument, but no monument is actually located there. The park is located in Sherman Oaks between Hazeltine Avenue and Van Nuys Boulevard, south of Magnolia Boulevard and one block north of Riverside Drive.

To commemorate this historic 60-year anniversary, the Rotary Club of Sherman Oaks Sunset is proud to be a contributing sponsor to the first annual Memorial Day "Music in the Park" concert from 4-6 p.m. Monday, May 26, at Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks War Memorial Park.

The concert will feature Horace Heidt Jr. and his All Star Big Band, starring Doug Swander, Kae Butterfield, Pat Walmisley and the U.S. Army Color Guard.

Representatives from the city of Los Angeles and the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce will be on hand to join in the festivities.
