The Calabasas Historical Society invites the public to join them as they join Campo de Cahuenga Historical Memorial Association, California State Parks, Los Encinos Docents, Tarzana Community Kids Club, and the Leonis Adobe Museum on Sunday, October 19 in celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Butterfield Overland Mail Stage in the San Fernando Valley. Across the United States from August to October 2008 events are being planned to underscore the importance of stage lines in the 19th century.

In 1858, the stage left St. Louis on September 16 and arrived at the Campo on October 7 or 8. It changed horses at the Campo and immediately departed for the San Fernando Mission, a journey of 15 miles and then onto Hart Ranch which was an additional 8 miles. After this historic feat, the eastern and westbound services began on a regular basis to deliver mail across the country.

To commemorate the anniversary, an 1858 Stagecoach with four horses will travel west from the Campo along Ventura Boulevard (the old El Camino Real Highway) 18.9 miles to Leonis Adobe in Calabasas. With additional stops at Los Encinos State Historic Park and the Tarzana Community and Cultural Center, the journey is planned to take seven hours. Celebrations are being planned at the beginning, end, and each stop along the way. The stage will arrive at Leonis Adobe at 5 pm. Everyone is invited to join the Calabasas Historical Society at the Leonis Adobe, 23537 Calabasas Road in Old Town Calabasas, to greet the stage in western outfits.

Since incorporation on July 3, 1979, the Calabasas Historical Society has been dedicated to promoting and preserving the historical interest of Calabasas and surroundings. Among the many contributions the grass roots volunteer organization has accomplished are the Kathleen Beachy Memorial Library at Pierce College and the Ruth Loring Collection of Southern California History housed at the Calabasas Library.
