Evening at the Adobe kicks off Reyes Adobe Days
Contributed by: judi uthus on 10/1/2007

Well over a century ago, social gatherings were common place at the Reyes Adobe where the Reyes family hosted parties that drew people from around the region.

Late September, the City of Agoura Hills carried on the tradition at its historical landmark by hosting a special night, "Evening at the Adobe", to launch the Third Annual Reyes Adobe Days being held Oct. 12 - 14. After the site's refurbishment into a historical center was completed in October 2004, the City has created Reyes Adobe Days, celebrating California culture, past and present.

"Our historical landmark reflects the spirit of community that has made Agoura Hills a special place to call home for many generations," said Mayor Dan Kuperberg.

The city's Department of Community Services was awarded for its effort in turning the 1840s historic dwelling and barn into an interpretive center reflecting the state's rancho period.

Last year, Reyes Adobe Days drew over 13,000 visitors to the weekend festival centered at the historical site with free activities and entertainment embracing California history and outdoor culture.

"Evening at the Adobe" depicted an early California ambiance with an elegant black-and-white décor featuring candlelight throughout the grounds with music and authentic Mexican cuisine sponsored by Mama Rita's restaurant.

City representatives, organizations and residents participating in Reyes Adobe Days were present and previewed some of this event's upcoming attractions. Also attending were the artists who will be exhibiting throughout the Reyes Adobe Days weekend.

As the city is also celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, city council members announced that a time capsule buried 25 years ago will be unearthed at the festival and its contents revealed.

Founding council members Ernest Dynda and Vicky Leary were present along with former mayors Darlene McBane, Jack Koeing and Louise Rishoff.

"Reyes Adobe Days is going to be extra special this year," says Nick Newkirk, Community Service Coordinator for the City of Agoura Hills.

Actor and local resident Rainn Wilson, who was a 2007 Emmy nominee, will be the Parade Grand Marshal for the one-mile procession with the theme, "Celebrating 25 Years of the Good Life."

Following the parade is "A Day at the Adobe" with family activities and entertainment offering a glimpse of early California from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

On Sunday, "Breakfast at the Adobe" starting at 8 a.m. will offer a pancake breakfast, 5K & Family Run and health expo followed by "Music at the Adobe" featuring a world music outdoor concert starting at 11 a.m.
