Recently two docents at The Homestead Acre were featured in an interview on CNN news. Wearing their pioneer costumes
Betty Summers
and
Virginia Watson
told the little-known history of the northwest corner of the San Fernando Valley to
Greig Castillo
, a producer at CNN.
On Sunday, Aug. 5, from 1-4 p.m. five docents from the Chatsworth Historical Society (CHS) will show the museum, bungalow and grounds to visitors attending the event that day.
They will cover the development of the Chatsworth area from the first Natives who lived in the area to the Spanish explorers, the American period with homesteaders and stage coaches to movies, modern freeways and rockets in space.
One special display is of the building of the three railroad tunnels linking the San Fernando Valley to Simi Valley and points north.
There is no admission charge and plenty of free parking.
The Homestead Acre is located at 10385 Shadow Oak Drive, within Chatsworth Park South at the west end of Devonshire Street.
The Homestead Acre is a one and one-third acre chain-link parcel containing a furnished circa 1911-built redwood bungalow surrounded by beautiful gardens and fruit trees.
It is all that is left of what was once a 230-acre ranch settled by
James David
and
Rhoda Jane Hill
in 1886.
The property is owned by the Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks with the CHS acting as Conservators.
