The
Amelia Earhart
North Hollywood Regional Library will commemorate the 70th anniversary of her last flight and the 75th anniversary of her solo flight across the Atlantic with an all-day Earhart celebration from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, July 21.
The famed aviator, who disappeared somewhere over the Pacific in 1937, was a former resident of Toluca Lake and frequented the North Hollywood Library in its early years.
Besides having the branch named in her honor, a bronze statue of Earhart stands nearby at thenorthwest corner of Tujunga and Magnolia. In addition, the library houses an Amelia Earhart collection of aviation-related books.
There are also striking pictures of Earhart adorning the meeting room walls and an actual scarf worn by Amelia is housed on the premises.
The celebration will feature events and activities for adults, children and young adults as well as booths representating various aviation organizations in the area.Children and teens will have an opportunity to sign up for free small plane flights out of Whiteman Airport.
The day's formal activities are as follows:
10 a.m.-
Guy Weddington McCreary
, a noted local historian, will talk about Amelia's connection to the area and the library. He will be followed by
Ceci Stratford
, a member of the 99ers, a women's aviator group founded by Earhart, who will introduce a screening of the PBS documentary

, narrated by Oscar winner
Kathy Bates
.
12:30 p.m. - A live concert of 1930s music with the Le Jazz Cool Big Band Orchestra.
1:30 p.m. - Children's crafts and activities
2 p.m. - A showing of a 1937 Oscar-winning Frank Capra movie.
3 p.m.- Young Adult aviation related crafts.
4:30 p.m. - A special appearance by actress
Roberta Bassin
, star of the acclaimed one woman show
Amelia Earhart - In Her Own Words.
Ms. Bassin will perform as Amelia as she reads from her letters.
All activities are free and open to the public.
The library is located at 5211 Tujunga Avenue.
