Youth are invited to explore local history at the March Mountains Restoration Trust's Youth Naturalist Program, on Saturday, March 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This special program on Native American Culture will focus on the local Chumash tribes and what they used for food, clothing, tools, toys, and medicine.
"The Chumash tribes were hunters, gatherers, and fishermen, and lived throughout the Santa Monica Mountains," says
Susan Haugland, Youth Naturalist Program Director. "Many of their footpaths are still used today as trails."
Youth Naturalists will learn how the Chumash people depended on the world around them and about their ceremonies that marked the seasons. For example, during the winter solstice, shaman priests would lead several days of feasting and dancing to honor the power of the Sun.
"The Chumash people are a significant part of the Santa Monica Mountains' history," adds Haugland.
Also at the March Youth Naturalist Program, participants will celebrate Arbor Day by planting a native tree. Youth Naturalist Program is designed for ages 8-12. Pre-registration is required. Fee is $15.
