Pioneer Cemetery to hold Memorial Day observance
Contributed by: Jacky Walker on 5/4/2008

For the seventh consecutive year, the historic San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Sylmar will host a Memorial Day observance for the public at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 26.

The old cemetery is located at 14451 Bledsoe St., Sylmar, at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Bledsoe.

Sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Historical Society, the event will include a U.S. flag-raising and 21-gun salute performed by the All Veteran's Burial Squad at noon.

In addition, an engraved brick honoring Iraq war hero Army Pfc. Rowan D. Walter of Winnetka will be placed in the military section of the cemetery's memorial brick entrance.

Pfc Walter, 25, died Feb. 23, 2007, when an explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq.

Walter's will be the first brick commemorating U.S. Iraq War dead at the cemetery.

Other engraved bricks in the entrance have been placed in remembrance of the 600-plus individuals buried there but whose graves are now unmarked due to vandalism and neglect, including six Civil War veterans and nearly 300 children.

During the observance, the public will be invited to buy a memorial brick for $50 to help support the cemetery.

For additional information, please call 818-365-5860 or visit www.sfvhs.com.

Directions: From the 210 Freeway, exit at Polk Street and go south to Foothill. Turn right onto Foothill and drive a half mile to the stoplight at Bledsoe. Parking in rear of cemetery.
