Pioneer Cemetery hosts Memorial Day Observance
Contributed by: Jacky Walker on 5/10/2007

The historic San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery will host a Memorial Day Observance at 11 a.m. Monday, May 28.

Sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Historical Society, the event will include a tribute to the five Civil War veterans buried at the cemetery, readings of letters from soldiers serving on the front line in wars since the Civil War, and a 21-gun salute performed by the All Veterans Burial Squad.

The public may bring letters or send them by May 23 to SFVHS, P.O. Box 7039, Mission Hills. An update on the cemetery's preservation will also be presented, including information on the engraved brick project to bring dignity to the 600-plus people buried there but whose graves are now unmarked due to vandalism and neglect.

The cemetery was established in 1874 and is the second oldest cemetery in the Valley. For more information, call (818) 365-5860 or visit www.sfvhs.com.
