On March 13, 2001, I received my greatest gift, a new liver from an anonymous donor family in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I had been on the liver transplant list for 22 months waiting and waiting for my new liver. My wonderful husband,
Alan
, and our little dog,
Charlie
, had moved to Phoenix, Arizona to wait for a liver. My liver had been destroyed by a rare autoimmune disease, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, which has no known cure or cause.
My gift came with a call at 1:43 a.m. saying there was a new liver for me. The donor family gave me a new life. I will be forever grateful for this gift. My wish for the New Year would be that everyone would become an organ donor.

This is such a touching story! My brother is waiting to find out whether he is a candidate for a liver or not - he is a recovering alcoholic with cirrhosis of the liver, and has cleaned his act up so well, he deserves a second chance. Perhaps he'll get his greatest gift ever as well!
