Children's health & safety fair coming to Arleta
Contributed by: Gerardo Guzman on 10/17/2007

Assemblymember Felipe Fuentes (D-Sylmar), along with other elected leaders and community organizations, will sponsor the 39th Assembly District Children's Health and Safety Resource Fair.

The event, to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, is aimed at raising the consciousness of our community to the health conditions of children in the northeast
San Fernando Valley.

High rates of uninsured residents, inadequate access to health care services and a lack of health awareness have resulted in high rates of obesity, asthma, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

The purpose of this event is to empower parents through increased access and awareness to health services and safety information so that children can have a successful future.

Health services will be provided at no cost to participants, including immunizations, dental examinations, body mass index testing, blood pressure checks and examinations for cholesterol, diabetes, HIV and STDs.

Participants should expect to have fun in a fair-type atmosphere with good food, musical entertainment, and a chance to win raffle prizes such as first-aid kits, backpacks, gift certificates and bicycle helmets.

The event will primarily target the public elementary and middle schools in the 39 th Assembly District.

Branford Park, located at 13306 Branford St. in Arleta, will serve as a perfect venue for this event to highlight the importance of recreational activities and accommodate the 2,000 expected participants.

Branford
Park is conveniently located in the heart of the northeast San Fernando Valley.

Besides Fuentes, others sponsoring the event include
Sen. Alex Padilla, L.S. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, L.A. Councilman Tony Cardenas and Northeast Valley Health Corp.

Free services will be provided byProvidence Holy Cross Hospital, Mission Community Hospital, Tarzana Treatment Center, American Red Cross, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, Valley Care Community Consortium, UCLA School of Dentistry, LAC and USC.
