Greuel brings child health service to the Valley

As part of her continuing work to promote health among L.A.'s children, Councilwoman Wendy Greuel will offer free medical and dental screenings, immunizations and other services at her fourth annual Child Health and Safety Fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Valley Plaza Recreation Center, 6451 Saint Clair Ave.,North Hollywood.

The fair is free to all families in the city of Los Angeles and has attracted more than 1,000 residents from Valley communities in recent years.

More than 40 health organizations ranging from El Proyecto del Barrio, a non-profit agency that serves lower-income residents in the San Fernando Valley, to 1st Choice Dental will staff booths and provide free information.


Nurses from Valley Community Clinic will provide immunizations to children with current immunization cards.

The Los Angeles Police Department will inspect car seats to ensure they are properly installed in each vehicle and will give car seats to families who do not have age-appropriate models.

Representatives from the Los Angeles Unified School District will give away 450 bike helmets and will raffle off six bikes. A licensed chiropractor will perform check-ups to test spinal health and health professionals will book appointments for future medical screenings.


In addition to musical entertainment and free food stands, an arts and crafts station, a petting zoo and several play areas will be available for the children's entertainment.


Councilwoman Greuel has made improving child safety a cornerstone of her tenure in office. She recently launched an initiative to bring Safety Valets to every interested elementary school in Council District 2.

She secured updated safety signage around all CD 2 elementary schools and as chair of the transportation committee has demanded that the Department of Transportation prioritize safety projects around schools.

In addition to the Child Health and Safety Fair, Councilwoman Greuel sponsors three to four car seat giveaways annually.


The sponsors for the 2007 Wendy Greuel Child Health and Safety Fair include, the Automobile Club of Southern California, Keyes Automotive, Farmers' Insurance, California Highway Patrol, Department of Recreation and Parks CLASS Parks Program, Friedman Charitable Foundation, La Fonda, 1 st Choice Dental, First 5 LA, Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles Police Department, Los AngelesUnifiedSchool District.
