Breast cancer survivors tackle the open road
Contributed by: Jan Zatorski on 8/18/2008

Amazon Heart announces the launch of its latest unique United States adventure - Amazon Heart Thunder.

Amazon Heart - www.amazonheart.org- is an organization founded in 2004 to provide support programs for breast cancer survivors.

Amazon Heart Thunder is a one-week motorcycle ride on Harley-Davidsons from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Twenty breast cancer survivors from all over the world - Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom - will ride to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer support programs and experience a unique peer support adventure.

The ride starts in Los Angeles on Sept. 6 and finishes in San Francisco on Sept. 13. Harley-Davidson is generously loaning brand new motorcycles to all the women taking part to ride in this amazing adventure.

Chatsworth resident and breast cancer survivor Jan Zatorski will be taking part in this epic adventure, and is seeking support to reach her fundraising goal of $5,000.

Funds raised will support the peer support programs of Amazon Heart and the Young Survival Coalition.

"I learned to ride a motorcycle just for this adventure. After going through the ordeal of breast cancer, I felt like I had to pick my own challenge to overcome, not one that was put upon me. Riding gives me an incredible sense of empowerment and I'm really looking forward to sharing that experience with other survivors," said Zatorski.

Amazon Heart was founded by two young breast cancer survivors to meet the needs of women living with breast cancer through a unique approach to peer support - life changing adventures that help women come to terms with their experiences and move on to live life fully.

In 2004, Amazon Heart held its first Amazon Heart Thunder adventure, a one-week ride in California from San Diego to San Francisco. The adventure was so successful they have now expanded to offer a range of adventure experiences around the world:

* - Amazon Heart Thunder motorcycle adventures in Australia, the U.K. and U.S.

* - Amazon Heart Expedition - one-week treks in New Zealand and Arizona

* - Amazon Heart Odyssey - one week community action projects building houses and programs in disadvantaged communities in Sri Lanka, Montana and India.

In 2005, a University of Queensland research project evaluated the impact of participating in Amazon Heart Thunder on women's psychological adjustment to breast cancer and found it provided a unique and long lasting positive impact.

"The experience of breast cancer impacts everyone who is forced to deal with it in profound and sometimes unexpected ways'" says Megan Dwyer, co-founder of Amazon Heart and one of the riders.

"For those of us who have been through the experience of a diagnosis, there seems to be a common theme of wanting to live life fully, right now, in this moment.," Dwyer added. 'And there is also a strong need to connect with others who share this common bond. Amazon Heart Thunder is exactly that; women living with breast cancer coming together to form a supportive community, taking on a new challenge and living life to the fullest."

Harley-Davidson will loan motorcycles for the ride, and provide first-time participants with riding jackets.

A number of local dealers and Harley-Davidson Owner's Group (HOG) chapters will support the riders at stop points along the course to promote the event and raise local awareness for young women living with breast cancer.

The Young Survival Coalition (YSC) is the only international, non-profit network of breast cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to the concerns and issues that are unique to young women and breast cancer.

Through action, advocacy and awareness, the YSC seeks to educate the medical, research, breast cancer and legislative communities to persuade them to address breast cancer in women 40 and under.

The YSC also serves as a point of contact for young women living with breast cancer.
