'Healthy Living Spaces'
Contributed by: Pam Vetter on 11/1/2007

When it comes to cleaning up your house and going green, Dan Stih is an expert indoor environmental consultant who has written a book about "Healthy Living Spaces."

While this is especially a hot topic in the homes of Valley and Los Angeles environmentalists, it is surprising to find out how common sense comes into play.

"There are so many things that can make you sick in your own home. People need to use common sense," Stih explained. "People think they're doing the right thing by installing bamboo floors. But, the adhesive used with bamboo flooring has formaldehyde in it. Honestly, it's silly to buy something that can make you sick."

California is a desert so the best choice is also the most natural.

"Tile flooring is the healthiest alternative for California. Tile is easy to clean and it can't grow mold. You use a non-toxic sealer and there's nothing getting into the air."

Stih's book offers important advice when it comes to clean living, but he also helps people on a more personal level.

"I'm helping a woman who has breast cancer right now. She wants a clean house as she goes through chemotherapy. Working at her home, I discovered some mold between the walls surrounding the shower in her bedroom. They also have mothballs in the attic to prevent mice, but mothballs are toxic to the air which seeps into the house. In the garage, they have gasoline and bug killer which are both toxic because the space is attached to the house. Toxic air will affect the living space."

Stih has a great concern for children who sit under fluorescent lighting in classrooms.

"Compact fluorescent lightbulbs contain mercury. They also cause headaches and fatigue. Replace all fluorescent lightbulbs with real lightbulbs. Especially in schools. If you want to see energy and concentration improve in the school setting, remove fluorescent lightbulbs and put in natural lighting."

With more families talking about airtight spaces, consider what you house in those airtight spaces.

"Installing tile flooring and natural building materials is a good start. But, consider switching your laundry soap to non-fragrant soap. Fragrance is a huge issue affecting our health because of all of the chemicals it takes to create different fragrances. There are 600 different chemicals in fragrances. I go into homes and do testing by taking an air sample for six to eight hours. Frangrance is often a contributing factor. Cleaning products, which are big in schools with bleach and Lysol, also make a poor indoor environment. Thousands of people are sick, but they don't know why."

In fact, the three top things affecting our health are mold, pesticides, and fragrance. A toxic environment is created by many contributing factors.

"Be aware of air purifiers. Ionic air purifiers make ozone which is bad for your health," Stih added. "I'm passionate about these issues because I want to help people who believe they are creating a green home, yet are making their indoor environment worse. The EPA says we spend 90% of our life indoors. Think about that. If we spend most of our time indoors, we want the healthiest environment we can possibly create."

Stih can be heard on radio stations across the country. For more information on the top ten health hazards facing our indoor environments or Stih's book "Healthy Living Spaces," please visit www.HealthyLivingSpaces.com.
