"Electronuts" to continue meeting, change name
Contributed by: Robert Schoenburg on 2/17/2007

Attending a semi-irregular lunch meeting of the Scribblers, Marv Mallon, Fred Blechman, Bob Schoenburg, Jeff Mazur and Ron Reis took time out of their busy schedules to chow down at Coco's on Sherman Way in Canoga Park Feb. 17. Some took advantage of the senior discount.

How did this group get its name? "Originally, several years ago (about 7 I believe), Marv, Ron, Jeff and I were all involved with electronics and/or computers," said Blechman. "Marv had his software, Ron was writing electronics textbooks and Jeff and I were writing for 'Nuts & Volts' magazine. I coined the name Electronuts for the group, which was a bad pun on 'astronauts.' Marv re-branded us as the Scribblers."

Reis teaches at Los Angeles Valley College where he is the Technology Department Chair. He is the author of six textbooks and five young adult biographies, the latter on Jonas Salk, Eugene Clark, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle. Ron has also written two books on careers: "The Everything Hot Career Book" and "Careers in Art and Graphic Design." He is the current editor of "Working Nurse Magazine."

A native of Chicago, Marv Mallon is a retired software publisher. At 79 he is still quite active and writes a monthly column for an electronics magazine. He has also written numerous technical articles, and has authored two computer books. As a devout koi collector, he also contributes regularly to a British publication dedicated to the hobby. He and his wife, Reva, have been West Valley residents since 1960.

Also a native of Chicago, Schoenburg is a retired software author, publisher and teacher. At 65 he writes for the Los Angeles Daily News, and keeps busy with photography and video hobbies. He is an unofficial computer consultant for friends and family. He and his wife, Barbara, moved to West Hills during the May 1992 riots.

Born and bred in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, Jeff Mazur moved to the West Valley in 1974. He has spent the last 32 years working for the ABC Television network where he is currently a Senior Director of Technology. In his free time you might find him on the tennis court, playing poker or talking on his ham radio.

Fred "Crash" Blechman, 79, was a Navy fighter pilot flying F4U Corsairs off carriers in the early 1950s. He has written over 1,100 magazine articles and eight books about electronics, microcomputers and flying--including a current monthly aviation column. His latest books, "Bent Wings--F4U Corsair Action & Accidents" and "Flying with the Fred Baron," are available at amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.

A motion was made to continue these lunch meetings. It was seconded. The vote was 5-0 in favor. Then the group was asked how often we should meet. Monthly, quarterly, annually? Blechman remarked that, at our age, we might as well do this monthly. All nodded off in agreement.
