So many professions for one inspirational woman
Contributed by: Ashley Macias on 5/11/2008

Professional tennis player, licensed EMT, AMR paramedic, Fire Academy graduate and licensed bartender all byage27.

Jamie Macias has done many things in her life. She manages being a tennis instructor, a paramedic, and licensed bartender. When she stopped playing tennis professionally, Macias decided she wanted to become an EMT(emergency medical technician), with her ultimate goal of becoming a paramedic in the fire department.

Soon after she went to fire academy and became a paramedic and eventually, a bartender. Not only is she anextremely busy woman, she is a daughter and a great sister.

"There is a lot of pressure to be successful in what I do," says Macias, "I am a very ambitious person, and like to have many options to fall back on."

A 27-year-old Californian, daughter of Charles and Debbie Macias, started playing tennis at the young age of 7. When Macias was younger, she trained at Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center in Calabasas and North Ranch Country Club in Westlake.

During her teenage years, she won numerous junior tournaments. When she was about 14 years old, she started playing on the national level for the United States Tennis Association. Macias also played all four years of high school at the number one spot at Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth.

Throughout Macias' junior and high school years, she had a problem with self-confidence and motivation. She saw a sports therapist and a psychiatrist to help her work out her problems

.After finding a way to deal with her problems, she ended up being the Most Valuable Player for the Chancellors all four years, and motivating and inspiring many people who cross her path.

"It was hard juggling all the tennis and school on top of that," said Macias, "but it all paid off."

Macias is a very intense, caring and influential person. Now, she really knows how to get people in the right mindset, and help them cope with whatever problems they may have, being that she has been through them as well.

Anytime any family member, co-worker or friend is having a problem or mental breakdown, Macias reminds them that everything is going to get better.

"I believe that things have to get worse before they get better," said Macias. "That's how we grow to become stronger and better individuals."

After Macias' high school career, she was offered a full tennis scholarship to CalState Northridge, but turned it down to become a professional tennis player.

She was on the professional tennis tour from 1998 to 2001, but had to stop because continuing would have cost too much, and she was not making enough winning money.

During her time as a professional, she played many high-ranked, good players and ultimately earned her career high ranking of top 200 in the world.

During her three years as a professional, she had a traveling coach, Jim Lewis.

"Jamie is an extremely hard worker," said Lewis, "As long as she stays focus, she always gets the job done."

After Macias' professional tennis career, she decided she wanted to become an EMT, which ultimately would lead to becoming a paramedic in the fire department.

So,she enrolled in some EMT classes at a local community college in Woodland Hills. After passing all of her classes, Macias started to work at the ambulance service AMR (American MedicalResponse), and enrolled in Glendale Arroyo Seco Fire Academy, where she learned how to deal with things as a firefighter would.

After completing the different courses and strenuous tests assigned, Macias graduated from the fire academy and started to tag along with various fire departments to see how things worked.

Along with being a paramedic, she started to teach tennis at Braemar Country Club and take bartending classes to become a licensed bartender. Now, Macias is a full-time tennis instructor, a bartender at night, and is in the process of getting a job at a fire department.

"Ia m proud of everything my daughter has done and accomplished," said Macias' mother, Debbie, "I know she can do whatever she puts her mind to."

In a conversation with former Braemar co-worker Derrick Bauer, he expressed how hard working, and what a good personMacias is.

"Jamie shows up to work every day with a smile on her face," Bauer said. "She has a lot of things she is doing in her life right now, and it is a good motivation for everyone who is around her."
