Interfaith peace, love and joy were celebrated in a variety of ways at Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino this past Sunday, Sept 14.
Representatives of the Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim and Christian faiths and many of their congregants were present. The garden is on 10 acres nestled among oak and juniper trees at the center, conducted by the Sisters of Social Service.
This serene garden is devoted to peace-making, interfaith dialogue and environmental spirituality.
The afternoon program included inspiring talks and interfaith dialogue among Rabbi
Steven Jacobs
, Rabbi Emeritus, Temple Kol Tikvah in Woodland Hills; Rev.
Zelda Kennedy
, All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena; Dr.
Laila Al-Marayati
, Muslim Women's League and Dr.
Christophe Chapple
, Doshi Professor Comparative Theology, Loyola Marymount University.
Ceremonies on the site of the garden included: Native-American song and blessing with sage, Hindu "Arati" thankfulness for creation, ringing of chimes, water blessing and sprinkling, a Buddhist peace meditation and an ecumenical prayer for peace.
The Peace Garden's Web site is
www.interfaithpeacegarden.org
.
All visitors are welcome to walk and sit in the garden for prayer, meditation or just some relaxing moments.
