10 SFV Girl Scouts earn religious recognitions

Ten Girl Scouts from San Fernando Valley troops have successfully completed the "I Live My Faith" program of the Catholic Church.

They are among approximately 55 southern California Girl Scouts who received special religious recognition medals on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.

Recipients of the "I Live My Faith" medal include: Karina Palermo (Troop 770), Gianna Palermo (Troop 1892) and Bridget Abbene, Elena Akins, Alana Altamirano, Taylor Barnett,Kelly Gaines, Desirae Jones, Felicity Lubran and Sarah Wetzel (all of Troop 1953).

Other girls who received the "Marian Medal" were Genevieve Armstorff, Katie Barnett, Chelsea Cammarata, Alex Croell, Breanna Grille, Kristina Kaczmarek, Darbie Nolke, Katelyn Reynolds, and Julia Wall (all of Troop 1935).

The "I Live My Faith" program is designed to help Girl Scouts in the fourth through sixth grades to better appreciate the role that God and religion play in their daily lives.

The program's activities focus on developing each individual's potential as a friend, family member, citizen and church member, and includes elements of self-discovery, prayer and service to others.

The "Marian Award" is designed for older Girl Scoutswho areseventh-graders through seniors and takes approximately one year to earn.

The program traces Mary's journey from young teenager to woman to motherhood, focusing on the tremendous impact she had on generations and cultures throughout history.

These prestigious national religious recognition programs were created by the Catholic Church to encourage girls to grow stronger in their faith.

The optional programs are not administered in any way by Girl Scouts USA - which does not endorse or promote any particular philosophy or religious belief, and encourages diversity and freedom of religion - but the organization supports girls who participate and allows them to wear religious recognition medals on their Girl Scout uniforms.

"Our mission is to inspire girls with the highest ideals of character, leadership, and community service," says Gerry Keshka, CEO of Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley. "The Girl Scout program and the Catholic Church are both committed to the well-being of our youth, their families, and their future roles as caring and productive members of society.
