Shahnee earns award for yearlong Israel program

Shahnee! Among the members of Shomrei Torah Synagogue in West Hills, the name is becoming a household word.

Just one name does it all. It readily identifies the lady behind the year-long STS Year of Israel theme, which has increased our awareness of the successes and problems of the Jewish nation and strengthened our resolve to be a more active support group.

The Year of Israel, manifested by many lectures, concerts, scholars-in-residence, Jewish holiday celebrations, Israeli wine-tasting and culminating with the visit to Israel by some 60 of our members led by Rabbi Camras, has been a resounding success.

Much of the credit goes to Shahnee Chen-Zion, who for 12 months has been the active and dedicated chair.

In recognition of her contributions, she, along with her husband, Ori, were the recipients of the 2008 Todah Rabah Award, a formal declaration of gratitude from the members of STS delivered by Rabbi Camras.

President Michael Tudzin presented the award plaque, his final official act as his administration bowed out and the incoming president and board were installed.
