One of the simplest and most profound things we can do as individuals to slow the emmission of greenhouse gases is to change the lightbulbs in our home.
Making the switch from the incandescent to the flourescent bulb saves money on energy bills, and it also dramatically reduces the carbon emmissions from our energy usage.
Because the flourescent bulbs last longer, they also save money in replacement costs. A thirteen watt flourescent bulb is the equal to a 60 watt round bulb. But you might not notice that when you first plug them in., because when they flourescent bulb first comes on, it doesn't appear to be very bright.
Don't be discouraged. Wait about a minute and you'll see that the brightness of the bulb gradually increases to meet or exceed the brightness of it's heat producing, energy sucking cousin.
We get numerous messages about climate change and global warming every day. Some of them are mixed. Some of us don't want to know. It would be nice if more of those messages were empowering ones; messages that tell us, clearly, about simple things we can do. Changing your light bulbs is one of the simplest, and it will actually save you money.
