It takes a vIllage to raise global awareness
Contributed by: Kyoko Oda on 5/5/2008

"Every day is Earth Day," said North Hollywood friends and neighbors as they gathered on Saturday and Sunday to take charge of Big Sunday events along Lankershim Boulevard, between Burbank and Oxnard.

"Clean and Green" volunteers planted trees where there were stubs early on Saturday morning.

Maurice Sendak Elementary School became a hub of positive activity as volunteer leader Adam Gilbert led the effort for a better world at the school, engaging students, teachers, parents, Disney volunteers and Boy Scouts as well as member of the Kiwanis Key Club and Parks for People, an environmental advocacy group.

In the courtyard, students potted cuttings while Olga Juarez provided information about reducing, recycling and reusing.

Native plants such as salvia and sage topped the list of newly planted gardens on the three-year-old campus.

The school has been a beacon of excellence, teaching students about service and responsible behavior.

Since it was dubbed a "work party," the day ended with a DJ and lunch provided by the school's PTO.

Councilman Tom LaBonge provided tools, paint, trash bags, and small blue desktop bins to remind students to recycle.

It was a great day in the village as 300 people enjoyed the weather and made friends based on a common cause.
