Firefighters put out burning garbage in Sylmar
Contributed by: William Kus on 5/9/2007

At 3 p.m. Monday May 7, your normally pleasant day comes to a grinding halt as you smell the aroma of a smoldering pile of putrid garbage.

Luckily firetrucks from the LAFD's 18th and 87th Fire Stations, located in Granada Hills, responded quickly to put out any signs of fire before allowing it to turn into something more serious.

Speaking with a security guard who worked nearby, he told me a garbage truck was driving down San Fernando Road near the Balboa Boulevard overpass when the driver noticed smoke coming out the rear of his truck.

He quickly pulled the truck over someplace with plenty of space to dump the rubbish onto the ground.

The fire was out by the time I arrived on the scene. The entire area was clean by the time I witnessed the scene a second time around a few hours later.

This is one of the many dangers having large garbage landfills located near major transportation arteries. The people who live in Sun Valley have had to live for decades with landfills located right across the street from their house.
