Fans get what they want with Stones tribute band
Contributed by: judi uthus on 5/6/2008

Recently at the Sagebrush Cantina, the Hollywood Stones had a standing-room-only crowd "under its thumb."

The popular Rolling Stones tribute band recreated the British invasion with an evening of hits that impressed even the most die-hard fans of the real deal.

"They are the best Stone's tribute band bar none," said one 40-something patron who called himself English Dave. He grew up on the Rolling Stones' legendary rhythm and blues sound just like his American counterparts who had also come for their dose of satisfaction.

"I still have all my Rolling Stones 45s," said Gary Daly, 57, who drove up from Malibu to hear live once more the songs he said he's probably heard over a million times.

Comparing the tribute to the Rolling Stones concerts he's attended since teenhood, Daly was impressed with the imitation. "I'm really enjoying it," he said, heading to the dance floor with his wife, Maria, when "Angie " began to play.

The Dalys' 26-year-old daughter, Bianca, also came, out of tradition of attending Rolling Stones concerts with her Dad since she was 11 years old.

The Hollywood Stones, originally called Sticky Fingers, is an American group forming back in 1994.

"Coming from various states from around the country, the five of us met in Los Angeles and thought that the Rolling Stones was the greatest band of all time," said lead guitarist Keith Riffoff, who is a convincing, albeit healthier looking, Keith Richards. "At that time, not many tribute bands were around - we've worked hard at being fake rock stars extraordinaire."

Tribute nights at the Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas have become packed with patrons who love the price - no cover charge - as well as the convenience and family friendly setting.

General Manager Charlie Halstead says the restaurant is planning to book four more tribute bands this year.

"These nights have turned into multi-generational family events. The younger generations seem to like their parents' and even their grandparents' music."

"It's great that the Sagebrush does this," said Reggie Thibodeaux, 50, accompanied by his wife, Amy, and sons, Clay, 17, and Cameron, 15, from Sherman Oaks to experience the mock Stones' concert.

They watched as lanky Dick Swagger strutted about the stage playing Mick Jagger, so Stones fans could yet again spend one more night together.
