Simpson Storm Captures Reseda Regent
Contributed by: Tim and Cammy Mahoney on 6/16/2008

Lyndsey Mahoney, a senior attending Reseda Math/Science Magnet, has been accepted to attend Simpson College, located in Indianola, Iowa, just outside of Des Moines.

Simpson has been recognized as one of the top10 comprehensive colleges in the Midwest and attracts some of the top students in the nation.

Mahoney is closing out her time at Reseda High after excelling in the classroom, athletics and leadership. Her GPA of 3.8 earned her a Gold Presidential Medallion at the just concluded senior awards banquet.

She was a stand-out athlete while at Reseda, playing both softball and volleyball. Her softball highlights included a batting average of .420 her senior year, while playing first base.

Her talents also earned her a spot on the first-team All League (2 years) and team awards including MVP (two years), Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year and captain (three years).

She was also an integral part of the girl's volleyball team. As a 5' 10" middle blocker, she was able to lead her team the last three years in the Mission League, where she again was awarded a spot on the first-team All League (three years), MVP (two years), Outstanding Offensive Player of the Year and captain (two years).

Simpson College, a NCAA Div. III School, is recognized for its consistently competitive athletic program, with numerous NCAA tournament appearances and championships.

The coaching staff at Simpson actively pursued Mahoney, and she is eagerly anticipating the challenge of playing both sports at a college with a reputation such as Simpson.

Mahoney was not only a leader in the athletic arena - she was a leader on and off the campus. She became very involved in school leadership as a way to affect change and improve the culture of Reseda High School. She served as junior class president and as student body president her senior year.

At the senior awards banquet ,she was honored with the "Regent of the Year" Trophy, which has a permanent location in the administrative office.

She was also recognized by the U.S. Marine Corps as its recipient of the Distinguished Athlete Award.

Within her community, Mahoney is an active member at her church, devoting countless hours to teaching and molding the children she comes in contact with.

She has also become involved in mentoring the incarcerated youth at the Ventura California Youth Authority, serving as a member on the California State Epiphany Board, a Christian-based outreach program.

As a product of the LAUSD, a public school system that is often seen as flawed, Mahoney is one of those bright lights that give us all a sense that much can be accomplished, when given the opportunity through parental and family support.

Of course, none of this could be achieved without the caring and engaged instructors/staff being such an integral part of the student's life.
