13-year-old skips high school, wins award
Contributed by: Karen Vaisman on 5/30/2008

Michelle Vaisman,13, recently received an award from Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth at Cal State LA - based on her SAT scores of 1740 at age12.

Michelle was accepted into Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va. She will be in the early-entrace program for 70 girls ages 12-16. It's the only female residential early-entrance program in the country.

It has been around for about 22 years.

Michelle has a straight A - 4.0 GPA at Harvard Westlake Middle School and was seeking more challenge, so she has opted to skip high school.

She was accepted to Mary Baldwin College at age 12, the day before her 13th birthday. She'll start classes this September.

Michelle has won four scholarships, so far, to help offset the $31,000 tuition.

She still needs to cover about half of the tuition.

"I'm still feeling bittersweet because I'm leaving such a great school and all of my friends,"Michelle said. "Now, about five months after being accepted, I'm certain that this is the right path for me to take."

For the old-timers like me reading this article, the new SAT score was changed in 2005 from a maximum of 1600 to 2400. Congratulations to Michelle on this incredible accomplishment at the age of 12!!!! Sounds as though the early-entrance program with other girls her age will be a perfect setting for college.
