Fifth- and sixth-grade students from Our Community School (OCS) will have the very special and unique experience of performing at the renowned House of Blues on the Sunset Strip at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31.
Both the fifth- and sixth-graders will perform percussion ensemble pieces and the the fifth-graders will perform two songs on acoustic guitars.
Through a generous grant from the House of Blues Foundation, the students at OCS have had the use of 17 hand-drums and 20 acoustic guitars.
These drums have been used by all students throughout the year in conjunction with the school's already flourishing music program and have opened the students' world to creating rhythms and playing music in a group setting.
Studies show that children who participate in music programs improve in all academic areas, especially math and memory.
One of the most unique aspects of OCS is the school's outstanding music program. The students have an accomplished and talented music teacher who combines various music education methods to form a program specifically tailored to each grade level.
Through the use of Orff instruments (xylophones), drums and voice, the students are exposed to rhythm and melody while learning how to create music of their own.
The music teacher also incorporates songs of social justice into the program that correspond to curriculum from each class.
A guitar teacher led the fifth-grade students in guitar lessons. Each fifth-grade student at OCS an participate in the guitar program.
OCS, located in North Hills, is a public, charter school for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. At the school, parents and educators work together to create a nurturing and supportive environment where our children are respected and where students achieve success.
At OCS, students participate in a rigorous and challenging academic program, attentive to individual needs within a physically and emotionally safe educational setting.
OCS is located at 16514 Nordhoff St. in North Hills.
To find out more about OCS and/or the performance at the House of Blues, please call the school office at 818-920-5285 or visit the school's Web site,
