Assemblymember logs on with students
Contributed by: Nancy Hawthorne on 5/9/2008

Assemblymember Cameron Smyth sat in with eighth-grade students at Good Shepherd Lutheran School on Friday, May 9.

Using their hand-held computers, the students - and Assemblymember Smyth -did research on a name listed on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.

Students learned where their soldier was from, how long they served in the military, along with other facts.

Next week, when the class actually visits our nation's capital, they will look up their soldier's name at the memorial.

Smyth wrote a letter ofrecommendation for Good Shepherd to the Barona Band of Mission Indians. Because of this letter, Good Shepherd recently was awarded a Barona education grant to further the use of hand-held computers in their classrooms.

Hand-held computers are used at Good Shepherd to better engage students in their learning and to teach them critical thinking skills as they work to processall the information available to them today.

Using a program called Discourse, students can answer questions from their teacher, create graphs of their answers and take tests.

It is the goal at Good Shepherd to take the computers out of the lab and use them to improve the instruction of language arts and mathematics.
