Students from New Heights Prep enjoy outdoors
Contributed by: Marina Garcia on 6/18/2008

This spring, students from New Heights Preparatory School in Northridge traveled to different points in California in connection with the school's outdoor education program, which bridges the science curriculum and human development programs.

Students engage in thematic-science and community-building activities.

The sixth- and seventh-grade classes traveled to Yosemite, where students went on a series of challenging hikes that allowed them to see the beauty of Yosemite's glacially carved valley, but also enhanced their comprehension of environmental issues, and presented students with questions regarding an individual's impact on home communities and the world at-large.

The biggest takeaway from this trip was how it improved the group dynamic within these grade levels to make for a strong middle school community that will be active and passionate at New Heights for many years to come.

The eigth-grade class traveled to the Headlands Institute, located north of San Francisco. Students gained knowledge about watersheds and focused on observation, questioning and communication through a series of different hikes.

They also had the opportunity to analyze observations and findings in a lab at the end of each day. Activities throughout this trip highlighted the human impact on the physical environment, such as erosion, air pollution, and climate change.

The ninth- and tenth-grade classes went to Big Bear, where the Ojai Foundation provided them the opportunity to further their understanding of how important the council process is for high school students.

Responsibility and action were the major concepts addressed in different styles of council where students recognized what a key element they are to school culture and community.

The junior and senior classes went ocean kayaking along the coast of Catalina Island where they took part in a series of activities that would strengthen their relationships with one another before leaving for college.

Students on this trip were exposed to three different labs which allowed them to become familiar with fish commonly found on the island, conversations about adaptation and natural history, and the many uses of algae.

On a series of different hikes, students were able to see, touch, smell, and taste a variety of plants and were able to take a boat cruise that placed an emphasis on collecting oceanographic data.
