Award-winning singer/songwriter
David Shepherd Grossman
has a catalog of more than 300 original songs. His work has been used on a number of television shows including the NBC soaps
Another World
and
Passions.
The Phoenix edition of
New Times
magazine referred to Grossman's originals as "some of the best songs you've never heard."
As a teenager, Grossman was an opening act for the likes of
David Bromberg
,
Maria Muldaur
and
Marty Balin
among others.
But when Grossman plays on Tuesday nights in the Muddy Moose Bar at Sportsmen's Lodge, it's not the originals that get most of the attention. Grab a seat at the bar and you'll find the "Music Menu," a 12-page volume that contains hundreds of song titles, all of which are available for request.
From the Doors and
Cat Stevens
to Talking Heads and
Tom Waits
, there are country songs, classic rock and dozens of Grossman's own songs from his 21 years of songwriting. He's been called a human jukebox.
With incredible skill on the acoustic guitar and a sweet, reserved vocal style, Grossman wins over new fans with every appearance. Some think they're just dropping in for a quick beer but end up staying all night.
Those who ask for a cover tune by their favorite artist are never disappointed with David's interpretation. Many pick up a CD of his originals before they leave.
Shows start at 7 p.m. every Tuesday. The Muddy Moose is at the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City, 12833 Ventura Blvd.
