The Arthritis Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 18, at Warner Center Park, 5800 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Woodland Hills. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Participants can choose either a 5K or one-mil walk. Children and dogs on leashes are welcome. Warren Eckstein, host of the radio program "The Pet Show" on KRLA 870AM, will be the honorary chair of the Arthritis Dog Walk. Anyone who wants to help fight arthritis is encouraged to participate individually or to form a team with family, friends and colleagues. The Arthritis Walk is the Arthritis Foundation's signature event that takes place in communities nationwide to raise funds and awareness to fight arthritis, the nation's number one cause of disability. More than 66 million Americans suffer daily from some form of arthritis and chronic joint pain. It kicks off each May during National Arthritis Month. Participants walk in honor of a friend or family member with arthritis, while those with arthritis wear blue hats to signify their action in taking control of their condition.
L.A. Councilman Dennis P. Zine, Third District, is the honorary chair of the Warner Center Arthritis Walk; along with co-chairs Rose Goldwater, from Western Commercial Bank, and Dale Surowitz, CEOof Encino-Tarzana Medical Center. The medical chair is Dr. Boyd Flinders, of the Bone Health Center. The 2008 local Walk honoree is Jamie Torres, 28, who was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis when she was 18 months old.
