Brandon Rogers was kicked off
American Idol last night, the night after a host of sorry performances left a lot of singers vulnerable.
But I think going first in the two-hour show and forgetting his lyrics tipped the scales against Brandon's favor.
The bottom three was all guys, which makes sense. The guys have been underperforming in comparison to the girls all season.
Host
Ryan Seacrest called Brandon,
Sanjaya Malakar and
Phil Stacey down to the center of the stage. Phil was the only surprise in the bottom three - I thought his performance was great Tuesday night. But I guess he didn't stand out enough for a whole lot of people to pick up the phone and dial his number. I know I didn't. As for Sanjaya, the only reason he wasn't sent home is because he's the chosen one for the Web site votefortheworst.com, which is encouraging people to vote for Sanjaya just to screw up the show.
Brandon was not surprised with the news. He said he committed Idol's "cardinal sin" - forgetting your words.
Brandon has a nice voice and I hope he does well. Since he came into the audition process already as a professional backup singer, I hope he can parlay whatever singing connections he already has, combined with his new, high-profile and get himself a gig.
Next week
Peter Noone from the British pop band Herman's Hermits is said to be the vocal coach/mentor/career
resuscitator du jour.
Stay tuned...
